Frequently Asked Questions
Battery Basics
Are Powertex batteries safe?
Certainly, they are widely regarded as one of the safest lithium-ion battery chemistries due to their stable composition. Moreover, they incorporate an internal Battery Management System (BMS) which safeguards the battery and users against most common battery faults.
How long do Powertex batteries last?
Under normal usage as outlined in the manual, LiFePO4 batteries can endure thousands of charge-discharge cycles, typically ranging from 2000 to 5000 cycles. This is a significant improvement compared to the approximately 300-500 cycles offered by conventional batteries.
What are some advantages of Powertex batteries?
Powertex lithium batteries offer numerous advantages, including lighter weight, higher energy density, longer lifespan, cutting-edge BMS, low self-discharge rate, faster charging and superior performance in extreme temperatures.
Are there maintenance tasks for Powertex batteries?
These batteries demand minimal upkeep, yet it's advisable to conduct occasional checks on voltage and state of charge. To prevent damage to the cells, it's crucial to avoid allowing the battery voltage to drop below 12.8V, as reaching levels around 11V can result in irreversible harm.
Do Powertex batteries have a BMS?
All our batteries are equipped with a built-in BMS (Battery Management System) as standard. While they all fulfill a similar function, there are slight variations depending on the application. Additionally, certain batteries in our range feature Bluetooth connectivity, with details listed on the respective item pages.
What are the recommended storage guidelines for Powertex batteries?
All our batteries are equipped with a built-in BMS (Battery Management System) as standard. While they all fulfill a similar function, there are slight variations depending on the application. Additionally, certain batteries in our range feature Bluetooth connectivity, with details listed on the respective item pages.
Do Powertex batteries require a special charger?
Indeed, it's imperative to utilize a charger specifically engineered for LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries to uphold optimal performance and safety standards. Employing a charger not tailored for lithium batteries may pose risks of battery damage or safety hazards, potentially nullifying the warranty. The charging voltage for these batteries ranges from 13.8V to 14.7V, while the charging current varies by battery model, as indicated on the battery itself, in the manual, or on the product page. These guidelines pertain solely to charging batteries outside of vehicles such as cars or motorcycles. Automotive and powersport batteries are designed to charge using the vehicle's stock charging system. However, if aftermarket parts or systems are employed that exceed the recommended current or voltage levels, it may damage the battery and void the warranty.
Can I connect these batteries in series or parallel?
Only deep cycle batteries are suitable for series or parallel connections. However, it's important to note that only one configuration—either series or parallel—can be utilized at a time; they cannot be combined. Each battery model has specific requirements regarding the number of batteries that can be connected, which can be found in the manual or by contacting us directly. Additionally, it's crucial to connect batteries with the same Voltage and Ah rating together to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.
What is the difference between Deep Cycle, Powersport & Automotive Powertex batteries?
Deep cycle batteries are specifically engineered for applications requiring sustained, low discharge rates over extended periods, such as renewable energy storage systems, marine and RV auxiliary power, and off-grid applications. Powersport batteries are designed for high-performance vehicles like motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles, offering lightweight, high-power output for quick starts and reliable performance in demanding conditions. Automotive batteries are tailored for use in cars, trucks, and other vehicles, providing dependable starting power while offering benefits like longer lifespan, faster charging, and enhanced safety compared to traditional lead-acid batteries.
How do I find the right battery for my application?
When dealing with deep cycle batteries, the appropriate choice hinges on the desired capacity or voltage. In such cases, it's advisable to either replace the current battery with one of the same voltage and Ah rating, or reach out to us for guidance if uncertain. For powersport or automotive applications, we offer a convenient battery finder tool. Simply input the year, make, and model of your vehicle, and it will identify the correct replacement battery. However, in certain instances, there may be multiple options available, offering varying levels of cranking amps and capacity. If your specific model isn't listed or if you have any inquiries, feel free to contact us for personalized assistance.
Do I need to code Powertex lithium car battery when installing?
Though not every battery replacement necessitates programming, certain newer models from Audi, Porsche, BMW, and similar brands are advised to undergo updates using a qualified scan tool programmer. This simple process guarantees alignment with the new battery's chemistry and capacity. Moreover, it alerts the alternator to the presence of the new battery, allowing for precise charging in line with its specifications and preventing overcharging or potential complications.
